An Invitation

The International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (ISCB) is seeking an extension of its efforts in reaching biostatisticians from economically less developed countries. A former geographical emphasis on the Central & Eastern Europe is now supplemented with targeting biostatisticians from regions such as Central & South America and the Caribbean. The Society welcomes applications for establishing new “National Groups” (NGs) of the ISCB within these countries. Currently, the Society recognises 4 NGs, all of which reside in the European region (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania).
This incentive is put forward in the hope of encouraging scientific interaction and exchange of ideas among applied statisticians from the target countries, particularly in the area of biomedical and pharmaceutical clinical research. It seeks stimulation of research into the principles and methodology used in the design and analysis of clinical research and to increase the relevance of statistical theory to the real world of clinical medicine. The aims mirror those explicitly expressed for the parental Society, which are the following:

• to stimulate research on the biostatistical principles and methodology used in clinical research
• to increase the relevance of statistical theory to clinical medicine
• to promote high and harmonised standards of statistical practice
• to work with other societies and organisations in the advancement of biostatistics
• to promote better understanding of the use and interpretation of biostatistics by the general public, and by national and international organisations and agencies within the public and commercial sectors with an interest in, and/or responsibilities for, public health
• to provide a common forum for clinicians and statisticians through meetings, seminars and publications

Apart from establishing a framework for scientific interaction in a target country, the benefits of setting up a National Group of the ISCB include the membership in the parental Society, which is covered through paying membership fees at the level of the NG. Such fees are usually much lower than those required for general ISCB membership. All ISCB members also receive biannual issues of the ISCB Newsletter and are entitled to lower registration fees at the ISCB annual conferences. Also, the NGs may apply for financial assistance in setting up local ISCB sponsored courses.
